CRKN Participates in Innovative Project to Increase Access to Canadian Documentary Heritage

June 14, 2013

Ottawa, June 14, 2013 - In collaboration with Canadiana.org, the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) has signed an agreement to kick-start the Heritage Collection and make available online some of Library and Archives Canada's (LAC) most popular microfilm collections from the mid-1700s to mid-1900s. In a separate agreement between Canadiana.org and LAC, Canadiana.org, a not-for-profit, charitable organization, is permitted to generate revenue from the collection for 10 years in order to pay for the digitization of the content currently on microfilm and photographs, as well as the creation of full-text metadata to facilitate searching the content, and the development of a sustainable infrastructure to maintain access to the 60 million items into the future. In the standard form of a library subscription, CRKN members raised seed funding to kick-start the development of the bilingual web portal, metadata creation, and infrastructure needed to create value-added searchable content. The agreement builds on CRKN’s role of providing access to large scale agreements for digital research content on behalf of its institutional members.
